 is something many schools are preparing their students for well in advance of those test taking days as a junior or senior. The fact is, scholarships, loans, grants and admission into their top schools often hinges on these numbers.  For some colleges, if your ACT and SAT scores are not high enough, they may never even see your application to find out what else you have to offer. The key is to look at the picture long before your student will sit for those tests and to be ready for them.

What are college tests good for?  They help colleges to determine just how well the student has learned his academics.  They cover most subjects and aim at testing competence in various areas.  Some colleges require a minimum requirement for consideration to attend that school.  Other schools with more flexible guidelines will allow students with lower scores, but they may restrict the types of courses they take as a first time student.  College testing is one of the key elements of getting into the school of your choice, and for that reason, they are important.

Testing can be a good first glance for the college.  For example, as your application comes in it is goes into a computer system.  If a school only has 300 places to fill, those who have the top scores are likely to receive attention first.  If a student does score badly on the test, but has done many other outstanding things in the last few years of their schooling, chances are this will not even receive notice unless there is room for it.  Some schools do take into consideration a combination of academics and other achievements, but top schools are looking for top students.

Preparing For Tests

 

As a student it becomes increasingly important for you to student for tests ahead of time, not just a few days either.  As parents, you can play an active role in helping your teen to get the studying help they need.  There are many ways to prepare for these tests.  Here are some guidelines to keep in mind.

 

·       Teens should concentrate on schoolwork above anything else. The fact is, extra activities are great, but they need not only to be getting good grades but to understand what they are learning too.  Later, on these college tests, they will be required to know this information.

·       Teens also need to take into consideration their weaknesses.  If you know your child struggles with math, now is the time to get them some extra help. Some teachers will offer out of school tutoring or you may be able to find a student in school to help them.

·       ACT and SAT prep courses are often available through community colleges, local schools and some high schools.  If these are available, allow the student to enroll in them.  Ultimately, they will benefit from the education and they will get a better understanding of what the test is like.

·       Allow them to take prep tests.  Prep tests are a good way to simulate not only what could be included on the test but also what the atmosphere is like and the stress.  By formulating this type of environment, they can get a real life experience.  But, do not make this all of their experience.

Being a positive influence on your child throughout their high school career will encourage them to do well with college testing.  You will need to help them focus in on their strengths and to develop ways to overcome any weaknesses they may have.  By encouraging them, not pressuring them, you will see that they do care and that they do want to do well.

 

It is often the case that college testing does not mean everything.  You do need those extras and those other achievements to really see the results. Yet, it can take a lot of hard work to balance both school and extracurricular.  With their parents help, they can accomplish these goals more readily and do well throughout their high school and college education.  College testing is just the start of the process for many students, today.
