Each school is different in what they will provide for the student. More elite schools provide more (for the added tuition cost) to the student.  By far the most common supplies given to you by the school will be a bed with mattress, a dresser for clothing and a desk to work on. Everything else is up to the student to supply.

 one of the most expensive purchases that the student will need to make in terms of college supplies is a laptop computer. Desktops are a good option, too, but not as flexible and nor as common any more. Bring with you all of the tools you will need to use that laptop too. Other Furniture:

 If you feel that your student will need additional furniture or even appliances check with the school's limitations.  Some schools will limit the amount of items that can be brought and used in the room. Usually a refrigerator is allowable (a small, college dorm size one is usually best) and in some cases the roommates will go in together to pay for this.  Additional dressers and other appliances may be allowable but most dorms are small which means that it will not hold much more than the necessities.

 

Supplies for School:

 College supplies will be a lot like those supplies needed for high school.  You will need a decent supply of notebooks, paper, and pens.  Be sure to have enough of what is necessary (for each subject.)  Realize that most colleges also offer bookstores where additional supplies can be purchased. You may also need to check for specific supplies required by the courses taken.

By taking some time to find the most affordable options, such as used books or even using an older addition, you can save money on these college supplies.

Money:

One of the most forgotten college supplies is money.  It is not wise to have a large amount of cash on the premises, but having a local bank where the student can access funds is a good option.  On the other hand, many parents given their students a credit card in which they have cosigned, with a low limit.  This can be for the purchase of food or other college supplies and the bill can go to mom and dad.  Many students will need to pay for these costs themselves, though.

 

College supplies should be in terms of needs not wants.  Because dorm rooms are small, you may not find room for that fun chair or that oversized dresser.  Instead, use your room wisely by bringing with you just what you need.  Having a few personal touches like pictures and tokens of safety can also provide you with a little bit of reassurance that they will be okay while gone away at school.
